Status of compatibility with the requirements

We firmly believe that the internet should be accessible to everyone - regardless of circumstances or ability - and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to as many people as possible.

To achieve this, we orientate ourselves as closely as possible to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at conformance level AA of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines explain how web content can be made accessible to people with different disabilities. Compliance with these guidelines helps us to ensure that the website is accessible to everyone: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairments, cognitive impairments and many others.

This website uses various technologies to ensure the best possible accessibility at all times. We use an accessibility interface that allows people with specific disabilities to customise the user interface (UI) of the website to their individual needs.

In addition, the website uses an AI-based application that runs in the background and continuously optimises the accessibility level of the website. This application improves the HTML code of the website, adapts its functions and behaviour for screen reader users (e.g. blind people) and for keyboard use by people with motor impairments.

Screen reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technology and various behavioural adaptations to ensure that blind users with screen readers can read, understand and use the website content. As soon as a user with a screen reader enters the website, they are directly prompted to activate the screen reader profile in order to be able to use the website effectively. Our website offers the following, supported by sample code screenshots:

1. Optimisation for screen readers: We run a background process that fully analyses the structure of the website to ensure accessibility even when updates are made. We use ARIA attributes to provide the screen reader with meaningful information - e.g. precise form labels, descriptions for clickable icons (such as social media, search, shopping basket, etc.), instructions for validating input fields and roles for elements such as buttons, menus and modal dialogues (pop-ups). The background process also scans all images and - if necessary - adds alternative texts based on object-based image recognition. Texts embedded in images are extracted using OCR (Optical Character Recognition). Screen reader adaptations can be activated at any time using the Alt+1 key combination. Users automatically receive instructions on screen reader use when entering the website.

   These functions are compatible with common screen readers such as JAWS and NVDA.

2. Optimisation for keyboard navigation: The background process also adapts the HTML and the behaviour of the website using JavaScript so that it can be fully operated using the keyboard. This includes: Navigation via Tab and Shift+Tab, control of drop-down menus with arrow keys, closing with Esc, activation of buttons and links with Enter, selection of radio and checkbox elements with arrow keys and their confirmation with spacebar or Enter. Quick navigation and content skip menus are also available - accessible via Alt+1 or as the first element when navigating with the keyboard. The background process also ensures that the keyboard focus is placed directly on pop-ups when they open and does not move outside of them.

   Users can also use keyboard shortcuts, e.g. "M" (menus), "H" (headings), "F" (forms), "B" (buttons) and "G" (graphics), to jump to specific page elements.

Supported profiles for users with restrictions

• Epilepsy-safe mode: This mode allows people at risk of epilepsy to use the device safely by removing animations with flashing or flickering lights and colour combinations that could pose a risk.
• Mode for the visually impaired: This mode optimises the website for people with impairments such as impaired vision, tunnel vision, cataracts, glaucoma and others.
• Mode for cognitive impairments: This mode offers various support options so that users with cognitive impairments (e.g. dyslexia, autism, stroke sequelae) can concentrate better on key content.
• ADHD-friendly mode: Helps people with ADHD or neurodiverse conditions to better grasp content and reduce distractions.
• Mode for blind people: This mode ensures compatibility with screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver and TalkBack. This software is necessary for blind people on PCs and smartphones - websites must be compatible with it.
• Keyboard navigation profile (motorically restricted): Enables complete operation of the website using the keyboard (Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter). The keyboard shortcuts "M", "H", "F", "B" and "G" are also available here.

Additional UI, design and readability adjustments

1. Font adaptations - Users can change font size, font type, line height, alignment, spacing and much more.
2. Colour contrasts - Selection of different contrast modes (light, dark, inverted, monochrome) as well as individual colour schemes for headings, texts and backgrounds with over seven options.
3. Animations - Users at risk of epilepsy can deactivate all animations - including videos, GIFs and flashing CSS transitions.
4. Content highlighting - Users can highlight important elements such as links or headings or emphasise only focused/passed-over content.
5. Audio mute - The entire website sound can be muted immediately to avoid sensory overload caused by automatically played audio.
6. Cognitive support - The integrated search function is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary and helps to understand terms, abbreviations and slang.
7. Other functions - Colour and size adjustment of the mouse pointer, print mode, virtual keyboard and many other functions are available.

Compatibility with browsers and assistive technologies

We do everything we can to ensure compatibility with the widest possible range of browsers and assistive technologies so that our users are free to decide which tools they use to access the website. That's why we support all popular systems that cover over 95 % of the market: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, as well as the screen readers JAWS and NVDA.

Notes, comments and feedback

Despite our best efforts to make the website fully accessible to all, there may be pages or sections that are not yet fully accessible, are currently being optimised or where a technical solution for full accessibility does not yet exist. We are constantly working on improvements, enhancements and new technologies to achieve the best possible level of accessibility.
